THE BLACK BOX, downtown Franklin’s theater, music and event venue, presents a wide-ranging lineup of music entertainment this February. A suburban hub for great music, THE BLACK BOX is located at 15 West Central Street. 

- Opera for Kids will be staged at THE BLACK BOX as part of the Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC) 2017 Family Concert Series. Featuring Little Red Riding Hood, the performance will be presented free to the community on Sunday, February 5, at 2:30 p.m. Set to the masterful music of Seymour Barab, Little Red Riding Hood is an operatic adaptation of the children’s fairy tale classic and brings the beloved story to life. Engaging audiences of all ages, the opera is under 45 minutes in length and is in rhymed verse. 

Family Concert Series events feature talented, professional musicians in an entertaining format especially geared to children. Sponsored by Berry Insurance, the concerts provide young audiences with a fun introduction to the world of live music.

- THE BLACK BOX New England Artists Series presents country singer and recording artist Ayla Brown at 8 p.m. on Friday, February 17. A Wrentham native, Ayla Brown has performed on the legendary stages of the Grand Ole Opry and Ryman Auditorium. She has opened for numerous country music stars, including Jason Aldean, Charlie Daniels, Sara Evans, Tracy Lawrence, Loretta Lynn, Darius Rucker, Josh Turner and Chris Young. 

A finalist on Season 5 of Fox-TV’s American Idol, Ayla was also a national news correspondent for The Early Show on CBS. Ayla’s most recent album, Let Love In, was released in 2015. Tickets for Ayla’s concert at THE BLACK BOX are $22 (adults) and $20 (students/seniors).

- Violinists Irina Fainkichen and Tara Novak will be joined by bassist Mark Poniatowski, drummer Kenny Hadley and pianist Ben Cook for “World on a String,” another presentation of THE BLACK BOX New England Artists Series . The February 26 performance will begin at 4 p.m. and will feature music from around the world, including Irish, Hungarian, Romanian, American and gypsy tunes. Tea service will be available in the lobby. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Irina Fainkichen was concertmaster of San Francisco’s Russian Chamber Orchestra for many years. 

Currently she is a member of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, assistant concertmaster of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra, and co-founder of “Flying Hearts” duo, which performs in a number of musical genres including jazz, Klezmer, and classic American tunes. Tara Novak is a multi-genre acoustic and electric violinist and vocalist, as well as an active composer, arranger and orchestrator. Her newest album, Ciaran and Tara – Live from Boston and Ireland, is a collection of live and studio recordings with Irish Tenor Ciaran Nagle. Tickets are $15 (adults) and $12 (students/seniors), with tea service available for $5.

Laughter Yoga

Laughter Yoga is a body/mind practice for well-being that involves deep breathing and a few stretches, playful laughter exercises (no jokes or comedy), clapping and deep relaxation. It has many benefits besides the joy of laughter. It can strengthen the immune system, combat the negative effects of stress, and is a powerful antidote to depression and anxiety. 

Any age and any level of physical ability can participate in this uplifting experience! They laugh together on every first Wednesday of every month. $5 donation to the church, $10 maximum per family.

LiveARTS Concert Update: Gruber and Stowe - Jan 29

2016–2017 CONCERT SEASON Soprano Sari Gruber and pianist Cameron Stowe will present a recital of songs at the third LiveARTS concert of the 2016–2017 season. They will perform music by Franz Schubert, Manuel de Falla, Samuel Barber, Charles Ives, William Bolcom, and others. The concert will be given on Sunday, January 29 at 3:30 p.m.  Sari Gruber American soprano Sari Gruber was born in Boston, but grew up in Germany until she was about 9, when she returned to the United States. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University and a Master of Music in Voice from the Julliard School. Her love of recital brought her to study song literature at both the Tanglewood Music Center and the Ravinia Festival's Steans Institute. At home in vocal repertoire from opera, songs, oratorio, and the symphonic literature, Sari Gruber has performed in all these capacities around the world. Cameron Stowe Pianist Cameron Stowe earned his Bachelor's degree from Oberlin College Conservatory and a Master's degree from the Peabody Conservatory (Johns Hopkins). He has appeared in concert venues and music festivals all around the world, playing with some of most prominent concert singers and of his generation. Since 2008, Stowe has served as Chair of the Collaborative Piano department at New England Conservatory and as a faculty member at The Julliard School. He has given masterclasses for singers and pianists throughout the United States and abroad.

On April 23, the final concert of our season will feature a musical trio including Bruce Creditor, clarinet, Donald Krishnaswami, viola, and Lorena Tecu, piano. You will receive a reminder email about that concert. All LiveARTS concerts are held on Sunday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. at the Meetinghouse of the First Universalist Society, 262 Chestnut Street, Franklin, Massachusetts. The Meetinghouse is fully accessible. Doors open at 3:00 p.m., and seating is open. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for students, and free for children under 12. Tickets can be purchased at the door. LiveARTS is an autonomous, nonprofit, nonsectarian affiliate of the First Universalist Society in Franklin. Opera for Kids: Little Red Riding Hood - Sunday, February 5

The Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC) will present Opera for Kids: Little Red Riding Hood on Sunday, February 5, at 2:30 p.m. at THE BLACK BOX, 15 West Central Street, in downtown Franklin. 

This special program is a presentation of FPAC’s Family Concert Series and is offered free to the community. A treasured FPAC tradition for more than two decades, Family Concert Series events are geared toward children in length and format and provide young audiences with a fun introduction to the world of live music. The performances introduce audiences of all ages to music of many genres and feature talented, professional musicians in an engaging, entertaining and interactive way.

Set to the masterful music of American composer Seymour Barab, Little Red Riding Hood is an operatic adaptation of the children’s fairy tale classic and brings the beloved story to life. Engaging audiences of all ages, the opera is under 45 minutes in length and is in rhymed verse. 

The performance features sopranos Mariko Matsumura and Shauna Martin as Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother, along with lyric baritone Thomas Gareau as the wolf. Pianist Synthia Sture will accompany the vocalists.

A native of Winnipeg, Canada, Shauna Martin received her master’s degree in Opera from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Music degree from Brandon University. Her performances include a wide variety of operatic and musical theater roles in works by classical as well as contemporary composers. Shauna is a founding member of the popular children's show Opera Night in Canada and has performed with Canada’s regional orchestras and on CBC Radio. 

A native of Tokyo, Japan, Mariko Matsumura received her bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance with high honors from the University of Montana and a master’s degree in Vocal Performance from Longy School of Music. Mariko's performance credits include Messiah, Aida, Hansel and Gretl, Der Rosenkavalier, The Magic Flute and numerous premiere performances throughout the Boston area. She has performed with Lorelei Ensemble, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, Jyugoya Ensemble, Chorus Boston, Setegaya Women’s Chorus and Opera Unmet. 

A graduate of The Boston Conservatory with a BM in Vocal Performance and an MM in Vocal Pedagogy and Performance, Thomas Gareau has performed a wide variety of repertoire, from jazz to musical theater to opera and oratorio. As a regular and soloist with the Boston Choral Ensemble, he performed in the memorable production of Thomas Tallis’ Spem in alium at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross as part of the Boston Early Music Festival. Other notable engagements include Odyssey Opera’s debut concert production of Wagner’s Rienzi at Jordan Hall. Thomas has appeared in numerous solo recitals performing standard repertoire and unearthing lesser known art songs and arias.

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Irina Fainkichen holds degrees from Rachmaninoff Music College (Novgorod, Russia), St. Petersburg State Conservatory, and Rubin Academy of Music (Jerusalem, Israel). She was concertmaster of San Francisco’s Russian Chamber Orchestra for many years, appearing as soloist numerous times. Currently, Irina is a member of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, assistant concertmaster of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra, and co-founder of “Flying Hearts” duo, which performs in a number of musical genres including jazz, Klezmer, and classic American tunes. She is a busy freelance violinist in the Greater Boston area.

Born in Ukraine, Irina Kotlyar earned her master’s degree and artistic diploma from the Jerusalem Rubin Music Academy. With Gregory Shifrin, the Kotlyar-Shifrin Piano Duo has won several international prizes and awards, including the Murrey Dranoff International Two Piano Competition in Miami and the First International Duo Piano Competition in Byalistok, Poland. The Duo has performed throughout Israel, Europe and America, including concerts with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, New World Orchestra of Miami, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, and Israeli Chamber Orchestra.

Electric Youth 2017 Debuts Two Shows at THE BLACK BOX

Electric Youth (EY) 2017, the international touring ensemble of talented singer-dancers trained at the Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA), headlines at THE BLACK BOX in downtown Franklin on Saturday, January 28, debuting two shows at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Backed by an eight-piece band of world-class musicians, Electric Youth delivers a fun, high-energy evening of family entertainment with an extensive range of contemporary pop, classic rock, Broadway and country hits for audiences all ages. 

The EY shows at THE BLACK BOX will feature fully choreographed performances of Michael Bublé, Colbie Caillat, The Black Crowes, Guns N’ Roses, Queen, Carrie Underwood, The Who, Stevie Wonder and more.

Selected annually by audition, the group is chosen for superior musicianship, stage presence, and “triple threat” accomplishments in voice, dance, and acting. This season’s ensemble of performers, ages 14-18, studies multiple dance disciplines, voice, and acting at FSPA. 

Electric Youth 2017 includes Julia Buccella, Brooke Collins, Aaron Frongillo, Sydney Leach, Caitlin Woodcock and Melissa Wyner of Franklin; Caroline Merten of Hopedale; Sam Evans and Colie Vancura of Medfield; Katie Gray of Milford; Naomi Fitzgerald, Mairead Nee and Griffin Wilkins of Walpole; and Susauna Wickstrom of Wrentham. 

The EY singer-dancers are backed by Boston musicians who’ve performed, recorded and toured with music legends Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, B.B. King, Diana Ross, The Temptations, Van Morrison and many others. Raye Lynn Mercer and Hallie Wetzell are Electric Youth’s Director and Vocal Director, respectively. Choreographers include Mercer, Casey Andrade, Cheryl Madeux, Nick Paone and Kellie Stamp.

Electric Youth has released six professional albums and toured Europe 13 times, with performances at England’s Arundel Festival, Disneyland Paris, professional theaters in Bristol, London and Windsor, and such renowned venues as Sanremo’s Ariston Theatre and Vienna’s Konzerthaus, Musikverein and Schonbrunn Palace.

"A Thursday meeting will gather feedback on seeking a "cultural district" designation for downtown, and consider the implications should that designation be granted. 

Town Planner Bryan Taberner said the meeting - set to run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Franklin Municipal Building - will consider the structural issues around such a label, which would make the area eligible for assistance with cultural events. 

"For the past couple of years, a group of people have been working at creating a state-designated cultural district in the downtown," he said. "What we plan to do at the meeting is to get everybody on the same page about the plans."

BLACK BOX Jazz: The John Funkhouser Trio - Friday, January 13

BLACK BOX Jazz presents the John Funkhouser Trio on Friday, January 13 at 8 p.m. The ensemble delivers an energetic, accessible blend of modern jazz, funk, blues, 20th century classical, Indian classical, and European and American folk music, which creates a funky, groove-oriented, fresh and original sound.

Fired by Berklee Professor John Funkhouser’s “explosive piano playing” (Boston Globe) and set in bold relief by his “exquisite, tight originals” (The Octopus, Champaign, IL), the band stretches the limits of traditional jazz form. Based in Boston, the Trio also includes Mike Connors on drums and Greg Loughman on bass. 

The band has headlined the Jazz In June festival in Oklahoma City, and has played at several major music festivals including the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga, TN, the Mellon Jazz Festival in Pittsburgh, PA and the Jazz In The Sangres in Westcliffe, CO. They have shared festival billings with the likes of Tuck & Patti, Javon Jackson, Mose Allison, Chicago and Jethro Tull. The Trio has mounted two national tours, performing in 19 cities, and has released three CDs of original material.

Dean College Presents: A Midsummer Night's Dream, February 22-26, 2017

The School of the Arts at Dean College will perform A Midsummer Night's Dream, beginning Wednesday, February 22, 2017 through Sunday, February 26, 2017.

A Midsummer Night's Dream is perhaps the best loved of Shakespeare's plays. It brings together the realms of the mortal and immortal, colliding in a wood outside Athens, and from there the enchantment begins. Simple and engaging on the surface, it is none the less a highly original and sophisticated work, where love is capricious as the wind, and where a mischievous imp named Puck plays with fate as merrily as a baby with a toy.

You won't want to miss our talented students perform in this well-loved play!

The Dean College production of A Midsummer Night's Dream will take place in the Main Stage in the Campus Center at Dean College, 99 Main Street, Franklin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday – Saturday and 2:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Broadway’s Matthew Scott To Headline THE BLACK BOX Broadway Series

Broadway’s Matthew Scott performs a one-night-only show at THE BLACK BOX, downtown Franklin’s theater, music and event venue, on Saturday, January 21. Beginning at 8 p.m., the event is the second in THE BLACK BOX Broadway Series, sponsored by Childs Engineering. The series, new this season, kicked off in November with Tony Award winner Beth Leavel. 

Fresh off his Broadway run as Adam Hochberg in An American in Paris, Matthew Scott will perform a solo cabaret show.

Important Cultural District Planning Meeting - Jan 19 - 7:00 PM

The Town of Franklin’s Department of Planning and Community Development invites you to attend a meeting at 7:00 p.m. on January 19, 2017 to hear an update on plans for a Cultural District in Downtown Franklin.

The Cultural District Steering Committee has worked hard for more than two years to draw attention to Franklin’s great cultural resources, advocate for creation of the Franklin Cultural District, and organize the annual Franklin Cultural Festival.

The Committee and Town staff are looking for your input regarding the creation of a state designated Cultural District and related management issues, as well as support for ongoing and potential cultural activities.

Input and ongoing involvement of all Franklin organizations and individuals is desired to develop a strong partnership consisting of cultural organizations, historical and community organizations, non-profits, private businesses, government agencies, educational and faith based institutions, and individual artists. All are encouraged to participate in this partnership.
